(a)The step sizemaybe determined from a survival test and abridged Probit analysis. First, a survival test is conducted for the subject chain model.Then,the mean fatigue limit and standard deviation are determined by an abridged Probit analysis.Finally, the step size is set nearly equal to the population standard deviation. If this method is chosen, the survival test and Probit analysis shall be conducted as described in Appendix A. (b)If sufficient test data are not available for a survival test,step size,before correcting to zero minor load,may be set empirically by Eq.(3).
